Jim Eads’ arrangement of The Punch Brothers’ politically-charged song from their album “All Ashore” is in a brisk 5/4 meter, with clever and impressive rapid-fire lyrics and a slow build throughout the chart. The rhythms are written in a way that causes them to flow naturally, and listening to the demo and Part Tracks will help the singers easily grow accustomed to that flow. The Punch Brothers’ great harmonic writing, part of their “newgrass” stylistic fusion that certainly employs blues and jazz flavors, is amplified by Eads’ effective and sometimes unusual vocal jazz ensemble voicings, and he also uses octaves in the ensemble at just the right moments. Note that one moment of S1 divisi toward the end of the chart means that at least 4 female singers are recommended for this chart. Additionally, because the chart requires the use of staggered breathing for a few particularly long phrases, having at least eight singers (SSAATTBB) will allow for employing the staggering smoothly.
Two piano chart options (fully-notated and mixed notated and slashes/chords), fully-notated bass, guitar and drums (also includes a piano/vocal chart and a full score)
